Letter from the Editor, March 2013
According to spring’s gatekeeper Punxsutawney Phil, we’ll be saying “Goodbye winter, hello spring!” before we know it. To celebrate those purported warmer days ahead, we’ve compiled an issue chock-full of ways to get that spring back in your step and make the most of the upcoming sun-filled month and beyond.
This is a busy month! Not only is March’s calendar filled with Daylight Savings, Passover and Easter, it also happens to be National Nutrition Month.
Sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the annual campaign’s mission is to inform families about making better lifestyle choices like keeping active and learning to choose fresh fare over processed food. For further insight, browse parentguidenews.com for articles tagged “activities,” “nutrition” and “health.”
In keeping with the promotion of well-being, this issue also includes our annual Camp Directory. According to the American Camp Association, participating in summer camp nurtures a child’s personal development and fosters self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem and self-respect. With winter’s snow still blanketing our doorsteps, it may seem premature to talk of summer, but now is the time to start seeking out the right programs for your child.
Those summer programs— along with most everything else— cost money. Did you know that The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that parents in middle-income families can expect to spend $235,000 to raise their campers to age 17? That’s a boatload of cash. To get the most from your federal tax return, score money-saving advice in our feature “The Cost of Raising a Child.” Retirement expert and personal wealth adviser Rick Rodgers, CFP, offers a breakdown of family tax credits and deductions to ensure you receive the maximum benefits this year.
Speaking of all things green, it’s time once again for budding flora, blooming trees and our bi-annual fashion spread. Written by yours truly, “For Fashion’s Sake” spotlights the season’s most coveted threads. Flip to the spread to discover hip looks for the playground and beyond.
Enjoy the sunny days ahead!
