Music Together®, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is a pioneer in early childhood music education. The program, designed for children from birth to 6 years, is based on the premise that all children are musical and have an innate ability to learn music as language. A primary goal of the program is to nurture children’s natural enthusiasm for music and movement. Families sing, dance, chant and play instruments in an informal and noncompetitive setting that enriches the children’s musical environment and guides them toward basic music competence and ultimately toward a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Music Together believes that music ability is as much a basic life skill as walking or talking and that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a steady beat and get great pleasure from participating in music activities, provided their early music environment is sufficiently rich. The Music Together program offers weekly classes for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents/caregivers who contribute, regardless of their own musical abilities, to enriching the child’s music environment through participation in class and home activities. Families are provided with two CDs and a beautifully illustrated song book to take home to reinforce class experiences and incorporate singing and movement into one’s everyday life. Pamela Beckerman, director of Columbus Circle Music Together and Riverdale Music Together, has been involved with Music Together as a parent, teacher and center director for 14 years.
