Research indicates that one out of four children has vision disorders that interfere with learning. Even if a child passes the standard “20/20” eyetest, it is still possible to have difficulty with visual function. There are many visual skills that are critical to learning, yet are frequently undiagnosed, because school screenings and general eye exams typically only test for 20/20 eyesight! Other visual skills critical to learning include: eye movements (tracking), binocularity (two-eye coordination), focusing (clarity) and visual-perceptual skills (understanding visual information). Diagnosis requires a specialized evaluation that goes beyond reading an eye chart, and it is performed by developmental optometrists who test all these areas. Vision symptoms may include: losing place when reading, difficulty copying from the chalkboard, difficulty concentrating on schoolwork or reversals. When these vision disorders are treated, there is often significant gains in classroom performance. In addition, children read faster, become more independent with homework, experience less frustration with school, exhibit greater self-esteem, and even enjoy reading more! If your child is struggling with school, please call to schedule a developmental vision evaluation! Established in 1964.
