Established in 1948, their school has earned a reputation for outstanding educational, diagnostic and treatment services for children from birth to age 21 with a broad range of mild to severe developmental and neuromuscular disabilities. The pre-school program also serves youngsters with learning disabilities, mental retardation and speech impairments. Each child’s program is individualized and closely monitored by a team of multidisciplinary professionals. Preparation for inclusion, mainstreaming and maximum independence in the community is emphasized. The Children’s Learning Center has the unique advantage of operating in a total therapeutic environment with extensive services on-site and educational, rehabilitation and medical staff who confer regularly on each youngster’s progress. The school is affiliated with the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. Many of the facility’s exceptional services are utilized by families throughout the metropolitan area and are available to all children in the school. These include a Rehabilitation Technology department to construct and customize needed equipment, a Communication Laboratory, and a computer area known as the Tech-know-tarium. Classes are small and staffed by certified special education teachers and one aide for every three students. The school serves over 250 students, and is administered by school administrators and clinical supervisors. Families are welcome to schedule visits to the classroom and are considered key members of the multidisciplinary team which plans each youngster’s program and monitors progress.
