Brownstein Special Ed Hebrew School was started in 2005 to accommodate local children with special needs who desire a Hebrew school experience. Now children ages 6-13 in the Brookville community, and from surrounding areas as far as Little Neck, enjoy learning about Judaic heritage and tradition as well as Hebrew language in an environment where they feel comfortable. Students at Brownstein often have ADD/ADHD or an autism spectrum disorder. These children are instilled with the confidence necessary to succeed through individualized attention that promotes their unique abilities. They are taught about Shabbat and other Jewish holidays in fun, hands-on activities. Brownstein students use the same materials as their peers in other Hebrew school programs, but they are allotted more time and attention to comprehend it. This reduces the frustration they may feel in a school setting that focuses on age-level achievement, rather than developmentally appropriate success. Students are prepared for their bar or bat mitzvahs, and receive additional individual attention as these events approach. Teachers are experienced in both special education and Hebrew school as well. The children at Brownstein are excited to attend their programs each Sunday, and they blossom academically and emotionally as a result.
