What makes the Spring School different? Hands-on, in-depth education like nothing you have ever seen! Peek into their classrooms and what do you see? At each age, children are learning by doing. Two year olds are sorting rain forest animals (“Iguana,” says Karen). Three year olds are tracing sandpaper letters (“M is my favorite sound, for Mommy, says Jake). Four year olds are counting with glass beads (“I can build two thousand, five hundred, thirty six,” says Justin, age 4). Kindergarteners sketch amoebas through a microscope (I’m going to draw this amoeba on my timeline of the PreCambrian Era,” says Ariel, age 5). First and second graders time the swings of a pendulum (This is one of the experiments Galileo did,” explains Lauren. We’re studying the Renaissance. Galileo was the first scientist to measure how long things took.”) Third graders rehearse an opera based on Macbeth (“I love reading Shakespeare,” volunteers Elisa. “When we study the Renaissance, we study the scientists and the writers and the artists.”) Fourth graders twist colorful squares to multiply fractions (See, this makes 3/4 of 2/3,” offers Rachel.). Fifth graders polish their reports on Renaissance explorers (“I turned my notes into an outline and then into a rough draft and now I’m finishing my map and timeline,” says Andrew). Down the hall we can hear three year olds playing “Twinkle Variations” with their Suzuki violin teacher. Glimpse the art teacher loading ceramic candle holders into the kiln for firing, part of the celebration of Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights. Children sing with Senior Jose, the Spanish teacher. Come see for yourself. The Spring School offers personal tours four times each day.
