Winston Prep is a highly individualized and responsive setting for high-potential middle and high school students with learning differences, such as language-based learning difficulties, nonverbal learning difficulties and attention deficit problems. The Winston Prep program is designed to challenge each student’s strengths while developing the essentials of reading, writing, mathematics, organization and study skills. Each individualized educational program is based upon a continuously modified understanding of each student’s dynamic learning profile that evolves as the student progresses and matures. Within the curriculum, skills are taught explicitly, including daily instruction in reading, writing, science, history and mathematics through grade 12. Small classes of 8-12 students help to create a comfortable learning environment and facilitate the individualization of course work. Students participate in a daily one-to-one instructional period called Focus, designed to serve as the diagnostic, instructional and mentoring centerpiece of their experience. Art, drama, gym and a variety of enrichment choices are offered within the school day and during the afterschool program. Interscholastic athletic programs are also available after school. At the high school level, students with appropriate levels of skill mastery may participate in college courses. Ninety percent of graduates in the last five years have been accepted to college.
