The ultimate birthday party for a Jewish young man or woman is the Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a rite of passage into adulthood, generally at age 13. At The City Congregation (TCC), the innovative secular celebration reflects a two-year, individual mentored journey to discover Jewish and/or intercultural roots and connections, as well as personal beliefs, values, interests and goals. Investigation of family history reveals roots and connections. Understanding tzedakah (charity) helps shape personal values. Role models are identified and community service performed. In-depth research papers on Jewish-related topics are written and presented at the Bar or Bat Mitzvah service. Subjects have ranged from Children’s Art at Terezin to Jewish Delis. Concurrent with the personal journey of discovery, Jewish history, culture and ethics are studied at the twice-monthly TCC KidSchool. Identity and pride are further shaped at engaging cultural Shabbat and Holiday services, as well as at celebrations, such as the communal Seder; youngsters are welcome participants in these events. During the learning process, the secular Jewish perspective is thoughtful and open. Critical thinking is encouraged. The culmination, the proud and joyous TCC Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration, is a memorable and meaningful once in a lifetime event.
