Morningside Montessori School is a preschool for children ages 2-5 years offering a small, secure, nurturing environment where children can explore their natural love of learning and take their first steps toward independence. The Morningside approach to early childhood education is based primarily on principles developed in the early 1900s by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and early childhood educator. Montessori believed that all learning begins in the senses. Two typical areas in Morningside’s classrooms are: the sensorial and practical life areas. The sensorial area contains beautiful materials that— in order to be understood and appreciated— must be explored using the five senses. In the practical life area, there are activities that help children master a variety of skills, especially self care. Morningside also blends non-Montessori elements of early childhood education such as blocks and fantasy-play. An array of inviting art materials are also available as are materials for math, science, language and geography. Morningside teachers create a stimulating environment as they vary materials to suit their students’ needs and interests.
