The Ailey Extension offers Tiny Steps for 2 year olds, and ballet and hip-hop for teens, ages 12-17. Tiny Steps is a series of creative movement and music classes for 2 year olds. Celebrating the natural ability of children to move in expressive ways, these weekly 45-minute classes engage children, parents and caregivers through group and individual participation. Music accompanies the classes to enhance basic musicality through the rhythms of drumming. Children develop body awareness and control while exploring their own creativity and learning to understand the connections between music, rhythm and dance. Teen classes are offered in ballet and hip-hop techniques, with no prior dance experience necessary. The ballet class introduces teens to the basic principles used in dance, focusing on developing correct posture, placement and strength in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. The hip-hop class teaches basic hip-hop dance moves as well as some lifted from today’s popular music videos. These weekly classes are taught by choreographers who have worked with the top hip-hop artists in the music industry. All classes meet on Sundays. Registration is currently open for spring (March 7-May 16) and summer (June 6-August 1) terms.
