A well kept secret that many community members are unaware of is that you can participate in literacy instruction through the LIU campuses Reading and Learning Development Centers. Since LIU is a non profit organization, the fee for individual reading evaluations and instructions is nominal. The goal of the centers is to provide strategic learning skills to select clients from the local community as well as to serve as a supervised training facility for LIU graduate student interns from either the Reading or Special Education Department. Clients are local students in grades two through six who have a marked discrepancy between their potential and their actual achievement. Each student is administered a series of diagnostic tests which measure educational achievement and intellectual potential. A detailed developmental history interview completes the appraisal. The individualized program is designed for the client based on the evaluation and history. All instruction is on a one-on-one basis. The goal of the program is to develop reading, writing, spelling and study skills. Written summary reports detail outcomes and recommendations. Call for more information about this community service.
