SNACK, Special Needs Activity Center for Kids, is the creation of New York Mom and SNACK’s executive director, Jackie Ceonzo. After being unable to find a fulfilling program for her son, Joey, whose disabilities fall on the autistic spectrum, she worked with a team of professionals to create a place where special needs children can socialize with others while learning practical skills in a fun and creative environment. SNACK is geared toward children ages 3-13. The ratio of students to staff is not more than 2:1. The staff consists of an art teacher, music teacher, behavior therapists and teaching assistants. The program consists of a variety of activities such as music, art, drama, yoga, movement, snack time, and fun and games. In the SNACK program, children learn to participate in purposeful play and everyday childhood activities that don’t come as easily to them as they do typical children. All activities promote interaction, and because children are placed in small, rotating groups, their social skills are enhanced. SNACK’s other programs, such as soccer classes and swimming lessons, also promote socialization. This year, SNACK is again offering a summer day camp during the three weeks of August when most children are out of their regular school programs.
