Respect
Going back to college for my master's degree has been an eye opener— in more ways than one. Without sounding like an old hag and dating myself (I am just about to do both), one of the most shocking things I have learned is how different the new generation of college students is from days prior…um, maybe much prior. Regardless, the last time I was in a classroom, I felt that, albeit a few students here and there, we had respect for the teachers and were at least pretending to pay attention to the material presented. This new generation feels it is perfectly fine to speak to the teacher as they would a buddy, and sometimes an enemy. Am I being super conservative because I actually want to learn this time around? I have been open-mouthed at the disruptions and arguments that have taken place in my classrooms. Is it a generation that speaks their mind more openly or one that refuses to show respect to those in positions that I believe should warrant it? Was there a lapse in effective parenting while these students were growing up or simply a form of peer pressure? I've always had a large circle of friends, from all walks of life, and I don't think any of my friends would act in such a disrespectful manner. If these kids can't do so with a teacher, how will they act with their bosses or co-workers? I know for sure that my parents would not tolerate my siblings or me showing disrespect to our teachers— and I plan to convey the same message with my children. I do hope we can change this trend.

I admire you for going back to school . The times have changed & I think in 10 years things will be even worse. My friends think that their kids can do no wrong & do not encourage any respect.
