Grandma Power 2012
Back in my day, “grandma power” meant whatever grandma said was OK, because it was grandma. Grandma was the one who could spoil your children, the person to vent to, the queen of sleepovers and the cook behind the best homemade food. Grandma had the power to love and takeover when mom was tired or had to be somewhere.
Many of my friends do not what to be called grandma because they feel that it means they are getting old. They do not want to babysit or feel obligated to. Thus they make up untraditional names instead of being called any variation of grandma or have their grandkids call them call them by their first names. The thing is we are getting old, although we are still young at heart. In fact, being known as grandma is music to my ears, especially when I am called to babysit!
I consider myself a cool, young grandma…and I am proud of it. The joy of seeing a photo texted to me of one of my grandchildren, even those in utero, instantly rejuvenates me. Such pictures are better than botox and give me internal power to put the zing in my bing.
I think grandma power today has a new dimension. We modern grandmas must keep up with exercise, good nutrition and technology. We know that the more active we stay with our minds and bodies, the better we can prevent disease and prepare for great grandmahood. (Scrabble, sudoku, crossword puzzles, yoga, spin, walking and sex help too.)
We grandmas can still be the go-to people to listen, love and be cool because our minds are young and we see the rainbows inside our grandchildren’s hearts. We’ve even got the power to keep an open mind. We can listen and learn from our children and grandchildren. That is the wisdom of this grandma for 2012:
being young @ heart.
