Been There...

Bea Frank is a 53-year-old first time grandma. She and her husband live in Southampton, New York, where they are currently collaborating on a screenplay, building a Web site and Skyping with their new grandchild. Frank also teaches spinning in her spare time and hopes to stay fit for more grandchildren, endless fun and maybe even a dog.

Bye-Bye Grandma

Thu Feb 10 9600

Three days ago when I picked up my ringing telephone, I heard my daughter saying in the background, "Say Hi Bea Bea," followed by the most precious voice saying, "Hi Ya, Bea Bea." I have been given the name Bea Bea by my granddaughter Molly. This little voice through the phone has me singing songs and smiling with joy. On this particular day, I became teary eyed as I was saying goodbye because I knew I would not be speaking with Molly or my daughter Amy and for eight whole days! They were going on their first family vacation.

It is day three, and I miss our usual phone sessions. I am having a severe attack of Grandma-dom loneliness. In order to fill this void, I thought about when we would speak next and how I could make it special. Off to Costco I went.

I found animal farm puppets! I was so excited. I called my husband to share the news and asked him to start thinking about a potential script. As soon as I got home, my husband and I took out the puppets. We had so much fun playing with the pig, cow, lamb and duck. When my husband started snorting as Mr. piggy and went into a pig routine, I completely lost it, laughing until I was crying and snorting too.

We began to produce the puppet show for our next Skype call with Molly. We even decided to incorporate music and create a puppet theater for future productions. My husband and I are having a blast. The anticipation of our next interaction with our granddaughter keeps us busy to complete the show and excited to perform and watch Molly's face as we Skype.

Do our children ever stop and think how a simple phone call can make a difference in their parents' lives?

"Young Grampy and Bea Bea had a farm, and on their farm they had a pig, E, I, E, I, Ohhh..." On our farm, we plan and play for our little grandchild to come our way, , E, I, E, I, Ohhh.
