Food Fight!

Fri Jun 24 2011

“One trainer told me that once you start working out you'll get addicted and you won't be able stop. I don't think I'll have that problem. I bet I can quit the gym cold turkey, and then eat the cold turkey!”
- Comedian John Pinnette

Okay, so maybe that's not the most positive quote to choose to introduce my blog today. I mean it does have the words “quitting” and “eating” in it. Words that are generally taboo to a person on a quest to get healthy (not to mention cold turkey...YUM...lol!). But I have to admit, it did make me laugh. Funny is funny regardless of the topic, and the guy is funny. If you've never heard of him I strongly recommend looking him up on youtube. He has had his own ongoing struggles with his weight and some of the stories are absolutely hilarious. Well aside from the obvious fact that I happen to love stand-up comedy, I also enjoy listening to people talk about their relationship with food in general. A “misery loves company” kinda thing I guess. It's also a reminder that we aren't alone in what we are going through. No matter how it might feel at times. Sometimes just knowing that makes the trip just a little bit easier to deal with. Speaking of food, do you know how I know for a FACT that I decided to get serious about my diet again this week, and that I am doing it correctly? Because not only am I hungry, but the cravings are back too. Oy!

Apparently that is something that doesn't go away, no matter how much experience or success you have had in this area. I would guess that it is that way with drugs, alcohol or any other type of addiction too. This week I have found that I have been craving stuff that I wouldn't even glance at anymore on a normal day. Are White Castle burgers even considered real food anymore? I know, crazy right? But the other day I could swear that I could smell em. Same goes for Italian food, which is my ultimate favorite. Just about anything covered in sauce and cheese gets a thumbs up from me. Well it used to anyway. Couldn't get it out of my head the other night while I was eating my grilled chicken and steamed veggies for dinner. Just momentary lapses though. And of course I didn't give in to any of them. The opportunity to fall “off the wagon” health-wise is always right there. Closer than we might think. Which is why staying strong is so important in a journey like this. I'll make sure to remind myself of that tonight when I am fighting off thoughts of something bad, but choosing something good. Hmmmmm...cold turkey perhaps? :)

As always, thanks for stopping by. Stay strong and enjoy your start to the weekend!

I commend you on your WILL POWER! I pray for the strenght and courage to have this sense of will power when it comes to food. I am with you all the way on this journey (since I am married to you), but I hope that in time I will be strong enough to turn up my nose to my favorite foods as you have. You are trully an inspiration to not only me but many of other people. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, and Thank YOU~!!!
