It's In The Cards
If you really wanna see what you've got. If you really wanna see what you're made of. If you really wanna see how bad you want it. Go for a jog on a humid night. Not just any humid night either. Go on a night where the air actually feels "thick," and the feel of your own sweat is hot and sticky against your skin. Then for good measure, do it at night. In a badly lit area…by yourself. Got that mental image in your head? Cool, then you are picturing me. I'm flattered. LOL. That was a pretty good description of me though. Chugging along down Fire Avenue right outside my house. Straight on to Meg's school and back…a quick mile and a quarter in the books. I have two 5K's coming up in a month or so and I will reeeeeaaaally need to be increasing my distances on these runs. But tonight it was more about staying in the hunt than winning the race. As soon as I got back I headed right to the basement for a quick circuit workout with my trusty deck of cards. Now I know I have mentioned "the cards" before, but I couldn't remember if I ever explained HOW I used them. It is really very simple actually. Four suits in a standard deck of cards, right (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs)? You assign one exercise to each suit. For me it is the basics: sit-ups, push-ups, squats and leg extensions. Shuffle the deck up really good…then turn a card over. Whatever the number on the card…that is the number of reps you do for each exercise. For example, three of hearts…3 sit-ups. Nine of clubs…9 push-ups.
Make sense? Picture cards are ten reps, aces are twenty. Keep on turning cards until the deck is done. The trick is to keep on moving…don't give yourself too much time to rest from one card to the next. It might not seem like that big a deal but trust me, when that deck is done you are good and sweaty. Especially on a steamy summer night right after a run. The best part about the cards is that you can literally do them anywhere. You don't need a gym or fancy equipment. Just a little floor space and some time. Thank you to my buddy Matt for introducing the cards to me. I both love and hate you for it at the same time…lol. Well needless to say I am done for the evening. The midnight hour has come way too fast once again and I think I hear my bed calling out to me. Another week is in full swing and thanks to this heat I kept things nice and simple food-wise today. Egg whites on a whole grain english muffin for breakfast, salad with baked chicken for lunch, and another egg white omlette for dinner (got home late and it was quick and easy…sue me!), along with a yogurt and a granola bar to help get me through the day. One thing I would have liked today….fresh fruit! I have been dying for some watermelon and grapes…something about the summer season that gives me a taste for those. Luckily for me…tomorrow is another day and in the city there are fruit vendors on just about every corner…YAY! But since you can't get to tomorrow until you turn in from today, I am off to bed.
Have a good one folks. Same time tomorrow…you know where to find me!
