Changing The Scenery
It really is amazing to me what a difference a little change in scenery can do for you. Every morning (Monday to Friday) my buddy Matt and I walk to the LIRR shuttle from our houses. It is roughly two-and-a-quarter miles and at 6 o'clock in the morning it is a pretty uneventful hike for us. We talk to each other...and we are both pretty entertaining if I do say so myself. Not a whole helluva lot going on otherwise in Medford, NY at that time of day however. We might see someone walking their dog. We definitely see alot of cars headed to the on-ramp for the L.I.E. People clearly smart enough NOT to be out walking that early in the morning. It is usually a very quiet, easy-going little trek and we don't see much in the way of other people. Until we actually get on the train that is. Well this week, thanks to Hurricane Irene, our shuttle has been out of commission....so the two of us have been driving into the city together. Not wanting to lose out on the hundreds of calories I burn off each morning with the walk...not to mention the chance to get my metabolism going first thing in the morning...I have been taking the ride with Matt downtown...and then walking up to my office from there. I have been starting out around Canal and Lafayette...and to the front of my building it is about two-and-a-half miles (Endomondo!). So I am already in the city bright and early AND I still get my walk in for the day...pretty cool if you ask me. Okay...so the very first thing I realized this week is that walking a couple of miles in Long Island first thing in the morning and walking the same distance through Lower Manhattan? WOW...just a wee bit different. For one thing it's alot noisier.
More cars and way more people. It is also alot BRIGHTER. My comfortable Long Island neighborhood offers plenty of well-trimmed lawns, gardens and landscapes. While the lower part of the city is a living, breathing New York City movie featuring gridlocked cars, reckless cabs, construction sites and all of the smells your nose can handle. There are also people EVERYWHERE...and what a cast of characters they are too. Today I took my eyes off the 5-story Victoria's Secret billboard just long enough to see either (a) the ugliest woman EVER.....or (B)...an ugly man in drag. I didn't stick around to find out which one it was (I didn't have to....it was soooo a guy...lol). Well either way I am still getting my miles in this week....and a change of scenery can definitely be a welcome eye-opener once in awhile. I think I will be happy to have my quiet neighborhood back next week though. As for the rest of my day, I had to run an errand at lunch today and turned it into a two-mile walk to the 59th Street bridge (took the train back to save on time....I WAS working you know). And to top off my night? An hour in the man cave for day two of P90X. It was plyometrics tonight boys and girls....and what a night it was. I actually wasn't sure what plyometrics were to be honest. Thought it was some kind of advanced aerobics. I sure as hell know what it is now though. Sixty minutes went by fast at some points....crawled by at others. But when all was said and done I literally had to peel my soaking wet shirt off of me. I am definitely going to feel this one in the morning. But I am already excited to see what tomorrow brings.
Time to turn in....g'nite all!
