Parent's Voice on Autism

Christy Reinhardt lives in Dutchess County, New York, with her husband and two sons. Since her son Crew was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, Reinhardt has been learning all there is to know about life on the autistic spectrum. Along the way, she created Crew's Voice, an organization to help other parents raise children with special needs.

Vaccinations

Can you believe pediatric doctors are turning away children who are not vaccinated? I guess they do not know what it is like to have your child stolen in the middle of the night two weeks after a big vaccination day. When all the words you have taught your child in 18 months are now gone! Imagine, your child's hair texture has changed and a bomb could go off and your child would not hear it.

When you take your child to the doctor to figure out what has happened and the practitioner says the word “autism” for the first time, then as a mother the guilt starts. Did I do this to my child? He didn't ask to be vaccinated.

This is what happened to me 11 years ago. I always sit and wonder if I knew what I know now, would I have done the vaccinations? If someone explained all the risks, would the outcome be different? I am not sure. I was a young mom with two boys and never even heard the word autism before. I did stop vaccinating my child with autism. I couldn't take the chance that he might react to something else from the vaccinations. I can understand a parent's point of view that didn't have to go through this diagnosis. But this is one of those circumstances when you have to try and walk in someone else's shoes before you give your opinion. Dig deep down and say, "What if that was my child, what would I do?”

I have one child who is 12½ and up to date on all of his vaccinations. My other boy is 11½ with autism, and after the big vaccination day at 18 months he has never had another vaccination since.
