Parent's Voice on Autism

Christy Reinhardt lives in Dutchess County, New York, with her husband and two sons. Since her son Crew was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, Reinhardt has been learning all there is to know about life on the autistic spectrum. Along the way, she created Crew's Voice, an organization to help other parents raise children with special needs.

Brother's Voice on Autism

In the words of Cross, Crew's older brother:

Crew is a very nice brother. He has always looked up to me when he didn't know what he was doing. I always try to help Crew if I can. Once when I was 6 or 7 years old, I wrote a book about Crew. It took an hour to write because I had to put in 15 different things about Crew. Crew can sometimes be angry when he breaks a DVD so he hits and pinches me. But that's OK with me because I dodge my brother's hands. If we ever lost Crew, I would be the one finding him. My best friends Larry, Joe, Andrew, CJ and John really help with Crew if I need them to. I wish I could help Crew in school, but I can just say "Hi" to make him smile. Crew is the best brother you can have when we are inside. I always ask Crew, "Do you love me?" He responds, "Absolutely!"

I sometimes ask myself, what does Crew's voice sound like? I wish I could know the answer, but I don't. When I grow up, I want to run a baseball league for people with autism. I think every day that Crew would pick his team by pointing, you, you, and you. Crew has been trying to act like me since he was 7. My mom, stepfather and dad have been a great help with Crew. I would like to thank my grandpa and grandma for helping with Crew and being supportive. When my friend Joe was 4 years old, he asked my mom if we would ever find Crew's Voice? That is how my mom started the Crew's Voice organization.
